1) How does laser remove tattoo?
The laser removes tattoo ink by the mechanism called photo-acoustic, where light energy directed at the tattooed area for a fraction of a second, passing harmlessly through the upper layer of the skin and targeting the tattoo ink directly. The speed of the energy delivered produces a vibration that shatters the ink into tiny particles which are then absorbed and removed through the body’s natural immune system.
2) How many sessions of treatments do I need?
You can see lightening of the tattoo after just 1 session. For a better outcome, 6 to 15 sessions are usually needed, depends on the skin type, location, size, depth, colour of the tattoo and type of ink used. Treatments are 4 -8 weeks apart and the estimated number of treatments and your expectations will be addressed during your consultation with our doctors.
3) Can tattoos be permanently and completely removed?
In most cases yes! Amateur tattoos can come off more quickly and completely. Blue, black ink respond best with laser. Yellow, green and sky blue can be extremely challenging to be treated while the white colour might even get darker.
4) Are there any side effects?
There are only minimal side effects for laser tattoo removal. The tattoo removal site might develop blister, pain and swelling after the treatment. There is possibility of incomplete clearance of tattoo, scar formation (less than 5%), hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation (usually transient) over the treated area.
